Although the purpose varies, nerf sword and axes are the types of toys that both kids and adults use. Some use them as cosplay props while some use them for simulated battle games. But whether it is the former or the latter, such types of toys that are of quality are quite difficult to find nowadays.
It is quite understandable—particularly those that are sold as “toys for kids”—since swords and axes are often viewed as weapons that instigate violence.
Nerf’s N-series, for example, is among the many known nerf sword brands today. It were, unfortunately, discontinued in 2019. Nerf sword enthusiasts cite a variety of reasons. But one that caught my attention is the perception that parents view swords and axes as a weapon for violence. Hence, the low sales.
However, things like that should not hinder you to let your child play and nurture its imagination, creativity, and physical skills using sword-type of toys. As such, I made a simple guide on how to choose the right toy (nerf sword) for your kid.
Things to consider before you buy nerf sword and axes
Not because it is a toy does not mean you can let your little one play with it. You need to check first if it is appropriate for his/her age and developmental level. That said, here are some important aspects to consider when purchasing a toy for your child.
Everyone knows that when it comes to buying toys, safety comes first. However, not all parents know what is safe and what is not for their kids. For example, if your child happens to like playing by throwing and hitting things, you should avoid toys that are heavy and with hard surfaces. Kids below 3 years old must not be handed with toys containing small parts as well.
It is also crucial to consider the material used to create the product; if it is toxic-free or not. Often, toddlers like to put anything in their mouths, including toys! It is best to opt for a toy that is easy to clean too.
Ease of use
Another thing to look for in a toy is its ease of use. Playtime, especially for toddlers, should not be difficult. Hence, as much as possible, choose a toy that does not need assembling. However, if your child likes a toy that needs to be assembled—a toy robot or a puzzle, for instance—make sure that it comes with an instruction.
A toy’s design can affect the level of a toy’s difficulty too. So, try to opt for something plain and simple that your little one would enjoy by himself.
As mentioned, not all toys should be given to kids as some could be potentially dangerous for them. It must match and is suitable to your child’s age.
The good thing is it is not difficult to do that. Almost all toys available in the market today come with a recommended age level. Not all nerf sword and axes, for instance, are recommended for children 6 years old below.
Thus, make sure to always check that part before buying a toy.
Last but not least thing to consider is the toy’s play value. Playtime should not be about fun and play only. It could be a great opportunity to let your child learn some valuable life skills too.
How? By simply choosing a toy that would help your kid’s physical and mental development.
An indoor slide for kids, for example, serves as an excellent exercise for children while they are at home. A childrens gardening set, on the other hand, can help your kid nurture his/her STEM skills. As such, always put in mind to buy something that would benefit your little one positively aside from fun and entertainment.
